When you place your order for one of our cartoons, covers, or note card sets, the image is then produced especially for you. Printing “on demand” means that each piece is individually created, giving you the best reproduction quality available.

Each cartoon and cover print is produced on demand, prepared by hand on acid-free archival paper. Exceptions are special- or limited-edition pieces, which are premade and may be purchased framed or unframed according to the specifications given on the product detail page for that item.

We produce all of our pieces using one of two superior-quality printing process. Depending on the type of art, yours will be printed as either a lithograph or giclée print.

Offset Lithography

Offset lithography is an offset-printing technique. Ink is not applied directly from the printing plate (or cylinder) to the substrate (typically paper or paperboard), as it is in gravure, flexography, and letterpress. Ink is applied to the printing plate to form the image (such as text or artwork to be printed) and then transferred, or offset, to a rubber blanket. The image on the blanket is then transferred to the substrate to produce the printed product.

Giclée (pronounced "zhee-clay")

Each piece that we produce on demand is printed using the giclée process, which is French for "spraying of ink". It is unmatched in its precise coloring and razor-sharp detailing, and has become the benchmark for fine art reproduction. The image is first captured and archived digitally. Each time it is reproduced, the image is digitally manipulated on the screen by studio artists for color correction and detail clarity to ensure an exact replica of the original image. From there, each piece is printed, one at a time, on a drum printer. As the drum spins, precise computer calculations control four ink nozzles that spray 4 million droplets of non-toxic, water-based ink per second to create a smooth, continuous-tone print. The finished piece has a 1,800-DPI resolution, similar to airbrushing, but much finer, with incredible detail and color vibrancy.

All framed prints come with hanging wire mounted to the molding and all the hardware you need to hang your print right out of the box.

Print vs. Deluxe Prints

All of our prints are created according to the same exacting quality standards. Our “deluxe” prints are simply created in larger sizes and finished with a heavier, 3” frame. Frames are included on all deluxe prints, while standard prints may be purchased framed or unframed. A framed standard print is finished with a 1.25” frame.

Caring for Your Print

A few simple practices can keep your print looking stunning for many years to come. Keep your framed print dust-free by wiping it clean occasionally with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use an ammonia-based glass cleaner or a furniture polish such as Pledge to clean it. This will cause the glass to cloud. In addition, avoid hanging your print in direct sunlight or near heat sources, as this will affect its integrity over time.

Framing and Matting

If you select framing for your cartoon or cover print, it will come with a high-quality wooden frame in your choice of finish (Black Satin, White Satin, Antique Gold, Antique Silver, or Dark Rich Mahogany). Each piece is completely backed and comes with a picture wire, making it ready for hanging.

All framed prints also come matted with pH-neutral white mats. The only exceptions are our Square Deluxe Framed Prints, which you may choose to purchase with or without a mat.

Our framed special-edition and limited-edition covers come with a gallery-quality matte black wood frame and are completely backed, including a picture wire. Unframed special- and limited-editions are automatically finished with a white mat.

To select framing options, navigate to the image you want and select the “Art Prints” tab. You will be prompted to select an unframed, framed, or deluxe print in the size of your choice. If you select a framed or deluxe print, a dropdown menu of frame options will then appear. You’ll be able to choose among the following frame styles: Black Satin, White Satin, Antique Gold, Antique Silver, or Dark Rich Mahogany. To see what the image will look like in one of those frames, simply click on the frame style, and the image will refresh to show the frame around it.

If you are purchasing a Square Deluxe Framed Print, an additional dropdown will appear to ask if you want your print matted or not.

Limited and Special Editions

From time to time, we offer limited quantities of particularly rare or unique images. Limited editions may be signed by the artist and numbered; please refer to the product detail page for specific information relating to this item. Special editions refer to unusual images that may be offered for a limited time, but are not necessarily limited in quantity.

Both special- and limited-edition prints typically come in a single size only, with predetermined matting and framing. Our framed special and limited editions come with a gallery-quality matte-black wood frame and are completely backed, including a picture wire.

Many discounts or promotions we offer on our prints do not apply to limited and special editions.
